Cutting own hair into layers?

I am wanting to go for a 'punk/rock' look with my hair. It's about half way down my back and straight. It has a few layers around the front, but i want it reallly choppy and layered. But i want to do it myself (So PLEASE no 'go to a hairdresser' answers!) I have heard that just putting it into a pony tail and cutting an inch or two off will make it choppy. Does that actually work? If no what would be the best way? Any info is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't suggest cutting your hair yourself unless you actually know how to do it. And since you don't want to go to a hairdresser, I'll tell you what one of them did to me. They took a chunk of my hair twirled it and then snipped off the end. I guess it worked, but it was only to add one more layer. Also you can buy a pair of scissors that kind of look like a comb those help with the choppiness.

I hope that helps!

ponytails are a good way to go

also, try going upside down and cutting it straight across to get your basic layers first

Make sure you have good sharp scissors

Get a fine tooth comb, and some scissors. Seperate thin layers and cut them all different lengths. I only do it around my face. That's the easiest way to make it look choppy.
